What
kind of user equipment do I need?
You will need a wireless modem and an indoor, attic, or
outdoor antenna, depending on your location. This equipment
will be provided at the time of installation.
You may also wish to acquire a hardware firewall at your
location and to create either a data wired or wireless in-home
or in-office network.
Alternatively, if you only wish to run one computer near
where the wireless modem is located, that you can plug the
modem directly into the Ethernet connector on your
computer. With this installation you should also install
personal firewall software on your computer.
We can advise you on configuring your system, and can do
the installation at no charge, other than the cost of the
equipment.
Do
I need an outdoor antenna?
It depends how close you are to our
broadcast antenna.
If
I need an outdoor antenna, what will it look like?
Currently our antennas are 1 foot tall
by 6 inches wide and 3 inches deep. We try to position
them to keep them out of sight.

Will
I have high speed uploads as well as high speed downloads?
Yes. Upload and download speeds
are the same.
Who
is behind Waterford WISP?
Waterford WISP is a service of the Waterford
Foundation, Inc., of Waterford, Virginia. The Waterford
Foundation has the mission to protect and inform the public
about the Waterford National Historic Landmark. The
Foundation owns and maintains numerous historic buildings
in Waterford Village, as well as a substantial amount of
surrounding farm land, in order to preserve Waterford Village
much as it appeared before the Civil War. All Waterford
WISP profits go to the Waterford Foundation.
Is
my wireless internet connection secure?
Yes. Wireless transmissions between
your wireless modem and our base station are encrypted
and therefore secure.
Do
I need to be in the line of site to the base station to be
a subscriber?
No. Due to the hilly terrain and
dense foliage around Waterford, we selected the 900 MHz
radio band for our network, so that line-of-sight is not
required for reliable service.

How
do I pay my monthly service charge?
We will direct debit your designated
bank or savings account for your monthly service charge.
Are
there any extra charges?
Once you have acquired and installed
whatever equipment you need there are normally no extra
charges.
What
kind of equipment do you use?
We use state-of-the-art equipment for the
primary Waterford WISP system. We also use state-of-the-art
traffic management equipmentthat
protects the system from attack and shares bandwidth in an
equitable manner even where there are many users increasing
the effective capacity of the system.
